GOT QUESTIONS? WE'VE GOT ANSWERS!
No. The beef is fully cooked in the can and can be eaten hot or cold straight from the can, with no water, fuel or preparation needed. Refrigeration is only required after opening.
Yoder's states 10+ years in the sealed can with no refrigeration. That figure assumes cool, dry, temperature-stable storage, so a basement shelf or interior closet is appropriate and a garage or attic is not, because heat shortens quality well before safety becomes a question. Discard any can that is bulging, leaking, rusted through or dented along a seam, regardless of date.
Both are 28 oz cans of fully cooked US beef, and the difference is texture and what you cook with them. Ground beef suits tacos, chilli, pasta sauce and skillet meals. Beef chunks suit stews, soups and sandwiches. Many people store both so the same protein can cover more meals.
Freeze-dried food is lighter and lasts longer on paper, but every serving needs water and usually heat before you can eat it. Canned meat is heavier and bulkier, needs neither, and can be eaten straight from the can. Most solid food storage plans hold some of each, using freeze-dried for weight-limited packs and canned meat for the shelf at home.
A single can works out at $19.95, the half case at $16.66 per can, and the full case at $16.33 per can. Most of the saving arrives with the half case, so the full case is worth it mainly if you are stocking depth in one meat rather than variety.
It'sa good feeling to have 5 of these on the shelf.
